Owners report three to five years from a camera that lives on a windshield, with heat the dominant variable and the memory card wearing out several times inside that. The parts that fail are, in order: the card, the power cell, the adhesive or clip holding it to the glass, and the mount's electrical contacts. The sensor and the lens essentially never fail.
What wears out, in order
The memory card goes first and goes repeatedly — it is a consumable, not a component. The power cell is next: a lithium cell in a hot climate can be gone in two summers, while a supercapacitor generally outlasts the rest of the camera. Then the mechanical parts, which nobody thinks about until they fail: adhesive pads that stop holding, windshield clips that lose their grip after a couple of years, and the electrical contacts in a powered mount, which are a common cause of intermittent freezes and dropouts.
The pattern owners notice
A striking number of failure reports cluster just past the warranty period — cameras that worked untroubled for two years and then started refusing to record, showing black screens in the app, or not waking after a cold night. Some of that is the warranty being set where the manufacturer expects the curve to bend. Most of it is that the consumable parts reach the end of their life at roughly the same time.
What you can actually fix
More than you would think. A new high-endurance card fixes most recording faults. A replacement power cable or reseating the mount's contacts fixes a lot of freezes and intermittent shutdowns, which owners frequently misdiagnose as a dead camera. A third-party bracket fixes a clip that has stopped holding. What cannot be fixed is a swollen power cell, and that is the one failure that ends the camera — which is the argument for the supercapacitor all over again.
Getting the most out of it
Shade, a sunshade, a high central mount out of direct sun, a high-endurance card formatted in the camera and replaced every couple of years, and a monthly thirty-second check that the recent files have current timestamps. None of that is interesting and all of it is the difference between five years and two.
